Cat Litter and Cleaning
Clumping Cat Litter, Brand: Cat's Best Original
This is the litter we see working brilliantly time and time again in the homes we visit. The clumping action is genuinely impressive – it forms tight, solid clumps quickly, making daily scooping straightforward. We’ve found it particularly effective at absorbing odours, which is very helpful if you’re away from your house for a few hours.
We recommend this litter because:
- Clumping ability: Forms firm clumps quickly, making day-to-day cleaning easy
- Long-lasting: For a single cat household especially, one tray can easily last a week or more with daily scooping
- Soft on paws: Unlike harder, stone-like litter, this feels more comfortable under the paws
- Excellent odour control: Absorbs smells effectively in most situations
- Eco-friendly: Biodegradeable and flushable which makes disposal much easier too
Worth knowing: We’ve noticed if your cat doesn’t cover their ‘number twos’, the smell doesn’t get absorbed very well. And when you’re pouring the very last bit from a bag, there can be some dust – however this does settle quickly.
This litter is best for most cats and we’ve seen many adapt to a change to this litter quite quickly.
Honeycomb Litter Catching Mat
No matter the cat litter you choose, chances are your cat likes to kick a little on the floor, each time they use the tray. There’s a great product we’ve seen in many houses which prevents cat litter visiting the opposite end of the home!
We’ve encountered different types of catching mats, but have found the double layer/honeycomb type to be the most effective at catching the litter when cats jump away or shake their paws.
Why we recommend honeycomb mats:
- Traps litter: The double layer/honeycomb traps effectively catch and hold the litter
- Saves cleaning: Because the mat catches the litter, there’s less of a need for a brush or vacuum each time your cat uses the tray
- Works with most litter: It’s most effective with smaller grains, such as Cats Best Original, or Catsan
- Many styles available: There are many colour and material options available so the mat can suit your home decor
Worth knowing: Although the mats do work with smaller litter based materials, they’re typically less effective with litter such as wood pellets.
If your cat has a tendency to be enthusiastic in the litter tray, a catching mat could be perfect for you.
Food and Drink Equipment
Stainless Steel Water Fountain
Water fountains are a great way to encourage your cat to hydrate regularly. In particular, stainless steel fountains are a favourite of ours for a few reasons. They’re easier to clean, more resistant to the build-up of bacteria and there’s an important health benefit – cats that drink from plastic bowls are more prone to developing cat acne. By switching to a stainless steel fountain, or bowl, removes that risk.
We recommend stainless steel fountains because:
- More natural for cats: Running water appeals to cats’ instincts, they’re naturally drawn to moving water sources
- Improved posture: Fountains are raised, which helps support better drinking posture, which is particularly beneficial to more senior cats
- Encourages drinking: Having drinking spots, includes bowls and fountains, encourages cats to drink more regularly, supporting kidney and urinary health
- Stainless steel benefits: Easier to clean, more resistant to bacteria, removes risk of developing cat acne when switching from plastic bowls
Worth knowing: Fountains don’t require too much maintenance, it’s just important to clean periodically, and change the filters as per the manufacturers instructions.
Luckily, there are many different choices of fountain available, so you can pick a fountain based on your cat’s drinking preferences. For example, flower-shaped with multiple spouts, straight stream or a tap-style flow.
Raised Food Bowls
Raised bowls are a great choice, especially for senior cats, in supporting posture and better digestion of food.
Why we recommend them:
- Improved posture: Supports more natural eating position and reduces neck strain
- Aids digestion: The raised angle helps food move more smoothly
Worth knowing: Like the water fountain, we’d recommend stainless steel options or ceramic instead of plastic.
There are plenty of styles to choose from to suit the aesthetics of your home.
Microchip Feeders, Brand: Sure Petcare
Microchip feeders are perfect for both monitoring eating habits for single cats, and keeping multi-cat managed at feeding time. The feeder reads the microchip in your cat, and opens the door to allow them to eat. If another cat comes along, the feeder doesn’t open.
Why we recommend a feeder:
- Microchip activated: Opens only for the right cat assigned to the feeder, keeping your other cats away
- Otherwise sealed: Stays sealed when not activated, keeping food fresher for longer
- Diet monitoring: Allows you to keep an eye on how much your cat is eating, which is particularly important for cats on a medical or weight management diet
- Battery powered: Convenient and can be placed anywhere for the cat
- Dual feeder option: If your cat eats both biscuits and wet food, there are bowls with a split in the middle
Following our advice above, we’d recommend purchasing the stainless steel bowls with these feeders.
Salmon Oil, Brand: Brilliant
Salmon oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and supports multiple areas of cat health. Key benefits include improved coat condition, heart health and joint support – but salmon oil contributes to overall wellbeing!
Why we recommend it:
- Multiple health benefits: Supports coat quality and softness, heart function and joint health
- 100% natural: This brand ‘Brilliant’ in particular contains no additives, colours, bleaching or chemicals
- Long-lasting: One bottle goes a long way even with daily use. You can expect to use just 1-2 pumps per day
- Encourages dry food eating: The oil is great to use on top of dry biscuits which can encourage reluctant cats to eat
Worth knowing: Like any supplements, it’s important to introduce salmon oil gradually, and keep a close eye on how your cat responds. Always follow the product instructions and consult your vet before starting – they’ll be able to advise on whether it’s appropriate for your cat’s health needs.
Always consult your vet before introducing any supplements to your cat’s diet.
Grooming
Self Groomer Face Scratcher
Cats love rubbing themselves against furniture, walls, and people. As well as being affectionate, they’re marking their scent (pheromones) on their territory using glands in their faces.
Face scratchers give your cat a dedicated place to engage in this natural behaviour. They can either be mounted (self-adhesive) on corners (which we find to be best), or flat walls.
Why we recommend face scratchers:
- Satisfies natural instincts: Provides an appropriate outlet for scent marking behaviour
- Supports protection of furniture: Can redirect your cat away from other marking behaviour such as sofa corners or door frames
- Grooming benefits: Helps cats groom their faces and remove loose fur
- Easy maintenance: Simple to peel the loose fur off and bin (or give to the birds for nesting material!)
Rubber-tipped Brush
Some cats need a softer touch when it comes to grooming, especially senior cats, or those with skin conditions. A rubber-tipped brush is a gentle alternative to traditional brushes and allows you to support your cat in grooming, and releasing loose fur.
Why we recommend rubber-tipped brushes:
- Gentle on sensitive skin: Rubber tips are much softer than wire ended bristles, making grooming more comfortable
- Perfect for senior cats: As cats age, their skin becomes thinner and more delicate, so will benefit from the gentler brush
- Easy to clean: The release button lets you remove collected fur quickly, helping keep the brush hygienic
Worth knowing: This brush is great for short to medium-haired cats, but won’t be as effective for longer coats. For those, we’d recommend the dematting brush listed previously.
Dematting Brush
Cats with longer or denser coats can develop tangles and mats, particularly in areas they struggle to groom themselves, or high friction areas around the joints. A good dematting brush can help making brushing sessions more comfortable.
Why we recommend dematting brushes:
- Two-sided design: Different sides for different jobs – one for getting closer to the skin to pick up undercoat or loose fur, another for general maintenance
- Gentle detangling: Works through tangles with less pulling of delicate cat skin
Worth knowing: This type of brush works brilliantly for cats with longer or dense coats, but isn’t really necessary for cats with shorter or less dense fur. However, if your cat has a short but thick coat (like a British Shorthair), it will still be very beneficial.
Healthcare
Pill Splitter
Many cats require medication in doses that don’t match standard tablet sizes. A pill (or tablet) splitter makes dividing tablets straightforward and accurate, which is crucial for proper medication management.
Why we recommend it:
- Precise dosing: Splits tablets evenly for accurate dose amounts
- Saves time: Much quicker than trying to cut tablets with a knife or spoon
- Reduces waste: Cleaner splits mean less crumbling and lost medication
- Safer: More controlled than using a blade or breaking tablets by hand
Worth knowing: Make sure to clean the splitter thoroughly after every use to prevent cross-contamination between different medications.

See what our customers say
Sophy is very much a ‘cat lady’ and understood all our cat needed. We had not been away for a long time due to various reasons so have been quite apprehensive to leave our cat alone as this was his first time without his cat companion too so had taken the time to research to make sure we chose the right sitter, I knew straight away after meeting Sophy for an introduction visit that we would be in safe hands.
An extremely professional service and wish you success with cat sitters of knutsford. Will book in again without hesitation next time, Sophy has taken our fear of leaving our beloved pet alone, away.
We will definitely book her again - thank you Sophy!
